{{contact.first_name}}, wearable tech is all the rage, so I’m going to tell you how to use it to supercharge your training plan.

First, the 411: Wearable tech comes in many shapes and sizes these days, from watches to bands to rings. Pick the device that has the features you want, and don’t be afraid to consider style in your decision. If you won’t wear a device because it doesn’t match your vibe, don’t get it!

All variations of these devices collect data you can then analyze in an app—including heart rate, sleep, steps and more.

Here are my Top 5 tips for using wearable tech to get health and fitness results.

1. Track Activity Levels

Wearables are great for building consistency, which is a huge part of fitness.

For example, if you always check your step total and notice you’re down 50% two days in a row, you’ll spot the reduced activity. And then you can take, uh, steps to improve the number.

But seriously, without a tracker, you might not notice drops in energy expenditure or gaps in workout history, and that can slow your progress toward milestones. If you’re always monitoring data, you’ll able to spot anomalies and make sure you log the movement you need to reach your goals.

2. Review Your Sleep and Recovery

Tired all day? Check your data!

Did you get less sleep than usual? Or was the sleep of poor quality? Or maybe the numbers tell you that you just haven’t recovered from a tough workout.

Having insight into recovery can help you make smart decisions in the gym, especially if you’re someone who always wants to “tough it out.” If the data says you’re just not at 100%, you might reduce your intensity for a day or two without guilt.

If you feel great and the data says you’re primed for action, stomp the accelerator.

3. Set Goals

Tech is great for goal setting. You no longer need a notebook or collection of sticky notes. You can simply log important goals through an app on your phone and track progress toward them.

This can be incredibly satisfying. It’s one thing to say “I want to squat 225 lb.” It’s another to log that goal and then see a visual representation of your progress toward it. As the numbers move up, your motivation will increase, too.

4. Get in the Game!

Many wearables come with “gamification” in the form of challenges, competitions and leaderboards. And they provide rewards, such as badges, levels or points.

This stuff isn’t silly! It can be a major motivator that drives results.

For example, you probably know someone who’s become much more active because of a steps challenge or a long workout streak.

If making fitness a game makes it more fun, do it!

5. Socialize

Many apps have amazing connectivity that allows you to interact with friends, family, coaches and community members.

A rivalry with a “frenemy” can be a ton of fun. Or perhaps you prefer support and encouragement from online pals. Whatever you like, it’s there for you in the wearable’s online community.

As a coach, I love to connect with clients who review my training and nutrition logs, and I love seeing what they’re up to as well.

Wear It and Move!

You don’t need a wearable to get fit, but if you’re into tech, these devices can enhance your experience.

What’s your favorite device and feature? I’d love to know.
